Abstract

For over a century, theological institutions have been one of the primary means of training missionaries. But research among long-term missionaries suggests that such schools, while beneficial in three particular areas, are an inadequate means of preparing and equipping cross-cultural missionaries. This is problematic in that they promote themselves as training centers and students expect to be adequately trained. This problem has existed for decades despite calls for change. Instead of relying on reform in theological education, stakeholders in missionary training should consider establishing an accrediting body specifically for training cross-cultural missionaries. They should also continue to look for experiential, relationship-based training options.
